meet Krysta, YIP designer/founderIt might not be obvious, but behind Youth Independent Party is an actual fun-loving group of grown ups! First up, we’d like you to meet our designer and founder, Krysta Lin.
Born and raised in Ohio, Krysta spent her formative years in New York City, graduating from Parsons School of Design and designing apparel for some of the world’s best-known American brands. Love and sunshine brought her to Southern California and finally to Long Beach, where she lives and works in a little mid-century modern ranch home with her husband Matt, daughter Kinzie and dog Pinto.
We asked Krysta a few questions to learn more about her and why she’s pouring her talent into dressing tiny humans.
Why did you decide to start YIP?
After the birth of my daughter, it was difficult to find quality, environmentally friendly basics for her at a reasonable cost. Luckily, I began working with a manufacturer located in Long Beach and, as fate would have it, they had all the ingredients I needed to start Youth Independent Party.
What inspires you?
Since becoming a parent, I don't have the time or energy to spend hours scouring flea markets or wandering and people watching like I used to when we lived in Brooklyn. Now in California, I find moments of inspiration just hanging out in our yard or during camping trips when we’re out in nature. Once our new baby boy is born, I'll start running again and I usually go at night. Something about running at night—the street lights, loud music and no cars—gives me a lot of ideas.
What's different about designing for kids versus adults?
For me, designing for kids is actually just taking things I like and translating them into something functional and wearable for a smaller person. Functionality is key. As a parent, I don't want to spend a lot of time wrestling with my child to get them into a stylish, yet sensible outfit. I want my kids to be able to run, play and get dirty without worrying about their clothes being too precious to have fun in.
Anything else you want people to know?
YIP is a new, crazy endeavor that I’m so proud to bring into the world. You have to have the support of those around you to do something you love. I'm so lucky to have such a wonderful and talented husband to work with and talented and creative friends to help us and bounce ideas off of. We are excited to finally launch Youth Independent Party!
